Cherokee Land Cessions, 1884

“Cherokee Land Cessions,” an 1884 Federal map, shows an astonishing alternative view of Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, the Carolinas, and Alabama. All the colored zones were once Cherokee territories, which were purchased, conquered, or taken by treaty by white men between the 1700’s and 1838. Section 36, the last part taken, was the Cherokee heartland, and the final territory that Cherokees are shown defending in the book Jacksonland.
